On Jesus’ way to the cross, He
is hungry and encounters a fig tree. The tree had many
leave but had no figs – no fruit.
Jesus curses the tree. His disciples hear Him. The next
day in their travels, the disciples see the same fig
tree that is now
withered and questions Christ about it. Jesus reminds
them of the faith that they must have in God. This is
the faith that God
has given to them and to us. Faith so powerful that we
can say to the mountain, “Be thou removed and be thou
cast into the
sea;” and if we do not doubt in our hearts, but believe
that it will happen, then whatever we ask of God, we
will have it.
These disciples have witnessed the power of God in Jesus
Christ throughout Christ’s ministry on earth. Why are
they amazed
that Jesus Christ has the power to curse the fig tree
and it die? Is it because they do not yet grasp this
faith from God and
its power? Jesus is telling them that they must grasp
this faith because through it all believers in Christ
have power, power
that will continue even after the cross. Unlike that fig
tree, we want to be obedient and faithful to God and
produce much fruit.
Faith in God lived by the believers in Christ will feed
many leading them to Christ and they will also produce
much fruit. This
lesson Jesus continues to teach us even today. He means
that we must grab hold to this faith, pour out our
hearts unto God
and forgive others as He forgives us for our trespasses,
and then we will experience His power and grace in all
that we ask of
God.
