The Israelites were not happy with having the real
true God with them always as their King and their God.
They wanted
something or someone else. Why? Because they wanted to
be like everyone else; the other nations that surrounded
them.
God gave them what they asked for, a king, with all of
the evil and foolishness that he brought upon them. This
happened
because the king, Saul, was not obedient to God.
Disobedience is sin and God will have none of it, not
even from a king.
There are always consequences for sin.
All Christians should study what happens when rulers or
political authorities do not obey God. It does not
matter what
political party a leader belongs to. What matters is
that he or she has been given authority by God only,
even if they win
the popular vote. When our officials cease to obey God
and become arrogant and try to be gods themselves, they
will fall
and cause their people to fall. In all of Saul's sin and
foolishness, God's prophet, Samuel, kept speaking the
truth from God
to him. That is what we must do for our leaders and
everyone around us. Speak God's truth in season and out
of season;
whether it is popular or not.
