We have been learning how God the Father put
everything in place for the birth of His Son, Jesus
Christ. Jesus was sent
by His Father to save all of mankind. So often we hear
the story of how the “three kings came to Jesus to offer
their gifts.”
First of all, the Bible does not tell us that there were
only three kings. Travel during that time was dangerous,
so three kings
traveling together would be a safety issue. They brought
many gifts, but three kinds of gifts are named. We also
know that
these kings or magi did not visit Jesus while he was in
the manger at his birth. Instead they visited as a young
child in His
home, probably at the age of two years old.
So what do we know about the time of His birth? The
angel announced His birth to the shepherds who were
taking care of
sheep in the fields. The shepherds saw the glory of God
as they received the angelic message. They hastily left
the sheep and
the fields to go to Bethlehem to see if the angel’s
message was true. They found Jesus in the manger and all
that they heard
was true. They immediately “returned, glorifying and
praising God for all the things they had heard and
seen…” What gifts did
they bring to the Christ child? Only themselves and
their faith! Isn’t that what Jesus wants from us? Just
ourselves and our
faith! He can do amazing things with just those gifts. |
